If you are not using an adhesive bandage for healing your tattoo:
Remove the temporary bandage once you are home or within 6 hours after your tattoo appointment. Once your bandage is removed, clean your tattoo with mild, fragrance-free liquid soap (Anti-bacterial is best!) Pat dry with a single-use paper towel or clean bath towel. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free lotion to the tattoo. If using Vaseline or Aquaphor, be sure to apply a thin layer and fully rub it in. Remember to always wash your hands before touching and cleaning your tattoo! Clean and moisturize 2x/day for the first two weeks of healing.
Additional tips for healing:
Don’t exercise heavily the first couple of days after your tattoo. Your immune system is activated and working hard to heal the fresh wound, so heavy exercise can delay healing.
Don’t swim or submerge the tattoo underwater for two weeks.
If you plan to spend time in the sun during the initial two weeks of healing, make sure your tattoo is covered. After the tattoo is healed, use sunscreen whenever the tattoo is exposed to the sun. This will help the tattoo age better!
If you live with pets, be aware of their shedding. Animals carry dander that can more easily infect your tattoo.
Clean sheets can help reduce the risk of infection and keep a new tattoo clean while sleeping.
Don’t scratch or pick at your tattoo.
Apply lotion/moisturizer anytime the tattoo feels dry or itchy.
